Anderson Center for the Arts is bringing back its film series spotlighting Black military service, pairing screenings with artifacts from the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum to confront decades of historical erasure. “Portraits of Patriotism: Part 2” returns Wednesday, June 24, at The Gregory School/African American History Research Center, a fitting backdrop as the building that once housed the city’s first public school for Black children in Freedmen’s Town.
Former Houston ISD educator Michelle Williams has filed a state appeal and federal civil rights lawsuit against HSID, challenging her termination after the district’s Board of Managers voted to override an independent hearing examiner’s recommendation that she be reinstated. Williams spent 26 years in Houston classrooms, teaching third-graders. She has also been a vocal critic of the state takeover of HISD and the state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles and Board of Managers.
For the past few years, the participation of Black people in yoga nationwide has been steadily rising. Data from the National Health Interview Survey indicates that the percentage of Black adults practicing yoga grew from roughly 9% to upwards of 15% leading into the mid-2020s. According to local yoga instructors, that same dynamic is happening in Houston.
